SPENCER: Joseph A. Hamelin, 78, of High Street died Monday, April 9 in Stamford Hospital, Stamford Ct after being stricken ill while visiting his daughter.

He leaves his wife of 6 years Aurore (Beaudreau) Hamelin; two daughters Elizabeth A. Hamelin of Carlsbad, CA and Marcia J. Hamelin and her husband Dennis Tracey of Weston, CT; four grandchildren Kristen, Libby, Janey & Henry Tracey; a step-son Keith R. Audette of Spencer; three step-daughters Christine M. Simakauskas and her husband Stephen of Spencer; Darlene L. Parsons and her husband Robert of East Brookfield and Charlene A. Audette of Auburn; 11 step-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his first wife Tomoko (Yamaguchi) Hamelin.

Mr. Hamelin was born in Worcester, son of Rosario “Rosie” A. and Wilrose (LaPlante) Hamelin. He graduated from David Prouty High School in 1952, Worcester State College in 1958 and received his Masters Degree in 1960 from Worcester State College. He began his 38 year teaching career at Oxford Junior High School in 1958, where he then became the assistant principal from 1961-1962. He later taught Math and Physics at North High School in Worcester from 1964-1980 before teaching at Leo T. Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester from 1980 until his retirement in 1996. He was a life member of both the NEA & MTA. He attended many NSF and General Electric summer institutes. He was a member of the Spencer Lions Club, American Legion Post 138 and the DAV. He was a former member of St. Mary’s Church in Spencer and an original member of their interfaith council and a former chairman of the CCD council. He is a current member of St. John the Baptist Church in East Brookfield. He served on the Luther Hill Park Commission for 5 years and the original David Prouty Building Committee. He was the Director of Veterans Services in Spencer for 1 year. He was a former member of the Spencer-East Brookfield School Committee. He was active in state and local politics. He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army in the 56th Amphibious Tank and Tractor Battalion.

The funeral will be held Saturday, April 14 from J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Memorial Mass at 10:00AM in St. John the Baptist Church, North Brookfield Road, East Brookfield. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. A calling hour will precede the funeral from 8:30-9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Central MA Chapter for Homeless Veterans, 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605.

SPENCER: Mary D. (Stopyra) Rock, 90, of Main Street died Monday, April 16 in Beaumont Rehab & Skilled Nursing Home in Worcester after an illness.

Her husband Milton D. Rock died in 1989. She leaves several nieces and nephews including Margaret Rossik of Auburn, Barbara Ann Gould of Worcester and Francis Stopyra of Auburn. She was pre-deceased by two sisters Stephanie “Stella” Wielgat and Pauline F. Young and three brothers Walter C. Stopyra, Theodore T. Stopyra and John F. Stopyra.

Mrs. Rock was born in Grafton, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Buba) Stopyra. She attended Worcester Public Schools. She worked the former G.E. Telechron in Worcester for many years before retiring.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, April 18 from J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church Street, Spencer. She leaves her husband of 53 years Hugh W. Caruso, three sons Larry J. Caruso and his wife Linda of Charlton; Joseph W. Caruso of Worcester and Richard P. Caruso and his fiancé Karen Benoit; a daughter Susan M. LaCasse and her husband George of Spencer; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; her mother Everdine Buck of Toronto, Canada; a brother Thomas Buck of Toronto, Canada; two sisters Barbara Giroux and Margaret Roffee both of Thetford, Quebec, Canada.

Mrs. Caruso was born in Montreal, Canada daughter of the late Frederick Buck. She was raised in Scottstown, Quebec, Canada. She was a healthcare attendant at Anna Maria Rest home in Worcester before retiring. She was an avid seamstress. She enjoyed arts and crafts, painting and knitting. She loved her dogs Sandy & Chichi.

He leaves his wife of 39 years, Bonnie L. (Vigeant) Edwards, a son Thomas F. Edwards, Jr. and his wife Tiffany of Warren, twin daughters Sherrie A. Remillard of Spencer and Sharon J. Richard and her husband James of Spencer, a sister Sadie Stratton of Athol, three grandchildren Kyle, Caden & Damien Edwards, a step-grandson Kyle LeBelle and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two brothers William & Henry Edwards and a sister Elizabeth Dominique.
Mr. Edwards was born in Worcester, son of Gardner and Anna (Glass) Edwards. He was a machinist at Metso Automation Co. in Worcester for several years before retiring in 1990 due to illness. He enjoyed antique autos, going to car shows and making models of all his favorite cars. He was happiest when spending time with his grandchildren, his nieces and nephews and their families.

SPENCER: Muriel F. (Lussier) Perra 78, of Donnelly Rd., died Friday, June 8 at UMass Memorial Healthcare, 55 Lake Ave in Worcester after a brief illness.

Her husband of 55 years, Roland R. Perra, died in 2009. She leaves three brothers Raymond Lussier and his wife Jane of Grafton, Roger Lussier of Spencer, and Eugene Lussier and his wife Elaine of Manchester, NH., three sisters Theresa Anderson and Constance O’Toole both of Spencer and Jeannette Dailida and her husband John of Worcester, many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sisters Claire Lajoie and Irene Perra and brothers Roland, Robert and Gerard Lussier.

Muriel was an events coordinator at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester for over 30 years, retiring in 2002.

She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Eugene and Blanche (Fagnant) Lussier. She was a member of Mary,Queen of the Rosary Parish.

Throughout her life, Muriel was very devoted to her siblings, her nieces and nephews and extended family.

The family would like to thank the staff at UMASS Memorial for the exceptional care given to Muriel before her passing.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 13 from the J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. SPENCER; Ruth G. (Gregory) Dufault, 94, of 106 Charlton Rd., died Saturday, June 9 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester.

She was the wife of Charles U. Dufault who died in 1996.

She leaves two sons; Richard N. Dufault of Spencer, Robert E. Dufault of Brookfield, two daughters; Jane M. Benoit and her husband Joseph of Spencer, Carol A. Dufault of Spencer, a brother Amos G. Gregory of Winterhaven, FLA, 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by two brothers; Norman M. and Edgar W. Gregory.

She was born in Putnam, CT, the daughter of George W. & Ella N. (Larocque) Gregory.

Mrs. Dufault was a shoe worker for 25 years at Capital Shoe Co. in Worcester and Klevin Shoe Co. in Spencer, retiring in 1979.

She was a life long member and the oldest living member of the First United Methodist Church of Spencer and enjoyed singing in the choir and working the thrift sales.

She was a member of the Spencer Golden Age and the Republican Town Committee for many years. She also worked as an inspector at the polls during the towns elections.

She enjoyed sewing, playing cards with family and friends, singing in the church choir and going to BINGO.

A Graveside Service will be Saturday, June 16 at 10 A.M. in Pine Grove Cemetery, Spencer. At the family’s request no other services are planned.

SPENCER; Emile R. “Slug” Gaucher, 87, of 15 Smithville Rd., died Monday, June 11 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Hazel M. (Rutherford) Gaucher, a son, John A. Gaucher and his partner Denise Messier of Plymouth, a daughter Barbara C. Gaucher and Donna Gamache both of Spencer, two grandsons; Jeremy Gaucher of Cambridge and Jason Dumas of Worcester, many nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

He was pre-deceased by three brothers; Robert, George and Armand Gaucher and five sisters; Claire and Cecile Gaucher, Patsy Shea, Gert Balchunas, and Nini Dunlop.

He was born in Spencer the son of Albert & Corrinne (Lamothe) Gaucher.

“Slug” was an art director at Haywood Advertising in Worcester, retiring in 1990. After retirement he opened his own business, “Gaucher Graphics” and operated it from 1992-2002.

He was a graduate of David Prouty High School and the Worcester Museum School of Art. He was a charter member of the MA Art Guild. A former member of the Massasoit Golf League. He was a member of the Spencer Fish & Game and of Mary, Queen of the Rosary Church where he was a lector. He served his country during WW II in the Navy. He was a member of the American Legion Post 138 in Spencer.

He was an avid golfer, painter, and dancer and enjoyed telling a good joke.

The Funeral will be held Friday, June 15 from the J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., with a Mass at 10 A.M. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. Calling hours are Thursday from 5-7 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Gauvin of NY and Ronald K. Gauvin of TN; three step-daughters, Debra L. Miller of Dudley, Cheryl A. Pekala of Oxford and Wendy L. Slingo of Dudley; a brother, Donald F. She was predeceased by her son, Francis P. McElroy who died in 1996.
Nancy was born in Webster the daughter of Wilfred and Ellen (Odgren) Butler. Mrs. Gauvin was an avid bird watcher. She enjoyed crafts, gardening, flowers and spending time with her family.
Her funeral is Saturday, June 16th with a service at 10:00 AM in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, June 15th from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home. (Roy) Berard, a son Raymond Berard and his companion Nancy Murphy of Spencer, two daughters Gail Bassett and her husband Brian of Barre and Lisa Giguere and her husband Steven of East Brookfield, two step-sons Paul Gagnon and his companion Laura White of Stoddard, NH and Timothy Morway and his wife Katie-Sue of Worcester, two step-daughters Pamela Gagnon of Seal Harbor, Maine and Susan Culver of Boca Raton, FL., a sister Jeanette Delisle of Spencer, five grandchildren Peter Sablack, Francis & Christina Berard and Forest & Sophia Watras, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Judy Berard and three brothers Norman, Leon and Ernest Berard.

Fran was born in Spencer, son of Francis G. and Victoria C. (Geoffrion) Berard. He was a maintenance foreman at Brookfield Factory Outlets. He loved working in his yard, raising his chickens and spending time with his grandchildren. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed playing practical jokes. The family would like to thank Dr. John Batbouta, the ICU staff at UMass Memorial Hospital and all of the Northwest Road neighbors for all their help and support.

At Fran’s request no funeral services are planned. She was the wife of Louis M. Aucoin, Jr. who died in 1999. She leaves two sons Louis M. Aucoin, III of Boston and Michael A. Aucoin and his wife Sharon of No.Andover, two grandchildren Julianna and Jordan Aucoin of No.Andover, three nephews, Robert Moylan, Richard and Ronald Bonofiglio, three nieces Kathleen Morganroth, Doreen Kelly and Felicia Keagan. She is predeceased by her sisters Mary Bonofiglio and Helen Moylan.

Ann worked as a bookkeeper for the Dept. of Public Health in Worcester for 15 years, retiring in 1992. Previously she worked in that capacity at the former Kingsbury Heel in Spencer and Model Cities in Worcester.

Born in Worcester, she was the daughter of Angelo and Felicia (Morello) Molinari. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester. She was a member of “Beato Angelo d’Acri Society” in Worcester, and Mary,Queen of the Rosary Parish in Spencer.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 20 from the J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. Debra worked in real estate for many years, retiring due to illness.

Born in Worcester, she was the daughter of Wilrose E. Letendre who died in 2011. She graduated from David Prouty High School in Spencer and Becker College in Worcester.

SPENCER: Cecile M. (Nobert) Bellefeuille 93, of Sherman Grove, died peacefully Monday, June 18 at The Meadows of Leicester Rehab after a fall.

She was the wife of Edward J.”Whitey” Bellefeuille who died in 2004. She leaves her son Edward P. Bellefeuille and his wife April of Ft. Myers beach, Fl., her daughter Cecile I. Bulak of Spencer, her grandson who she raised, David Bulak and his wife Shirley of Spencer, her constant companion Pauline Tetreault of Spencer, a brother Leo Nobert of Newport, RI, three sisters Irene Cadran and Simone Belanger of Lowell and Doris Shepard of Dracut, 7 additional grand children, 19 great grand and 81/2 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Cecile was born in Lowell, the daughter of Alphonse and Lucie (Leboeuf) Nobert and moved to Spencer in the 1950’s.

She was a shoeworker who later became known as “Mrs. Softee”, driving around Spencer with her ice cream truck while the children waited patiently to hear the “Mr. Softee” jingle. She later owned Cecile’s Diner in Leicester.

After retiring, Cecile worked the food concession stand at the former Zayre’s Dept. Store in Webster Square and later cooked meals for other seniors at the Spencer Senior Center. In the late 80’s, she and her husband started spending their winters in Ft. Myers Beach, Fl.

She is past President of the Spencer Woman’s Club and was an avid whist player. Cecile is probably best known for her love and caring of her grand children, her deep faith and her love of Hershey Bars.

The funeral will be held on Friday, from the J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. A calling hour will precede the funeral on Friday, from 8:30 to 9:40a.m. Following cremation, her ashes will be scattered in Florida.

She is predeceased by brothers Antonio, Burt, Maurice and Conrad Goulet and sisters Mary Ann Blais and Muriel Jordan.

Born in Canada, she was the daughter of Alphonse and Alma (Boucher) Goulet. She worked several years at Spencer Wire before retiring.

(Wolochowicz) Underwood, 95, of 46 Greenville Street, Spencer, formerly of Shrewsbury, died Friday, June 22, 2012, after a brief illness at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home with family by her side. She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Vernon F. Underwood who died in 2002. She is survived by her four loving children, Raymond P. Underwood and his wife Kendra of Charlton, William V. Underwood of Worcester, Lawrence F. Underwood and his wife Jean of North Brookfield, and Stephanie B. Underwood of Spencer, with whom she lived. She also leaves six grandchildren, Gina Maguire and her husband John, James Underwood and wife Elda, Brandon Underwood and his wife Renee, Nicholas Underwood, Philip Underwood, Peter Underwood and his wife Pamela, 10 great-grandchildren, a sister Francis Youderian, nieces, nephews, her good friend Mary Lou Stankiewicz, and her cat Charmer. She was predeceased by her sisters Adele Steinmetz, Stella Liseno, her brother William Wolochowicz and a grandson Joseph Underwood.

Helen was born is Worcester August 23, 1916, the daughter of the late Eva and Peter Wolochowicz. She graduated from Commerce High the class of 1935 and lived in Worcester before marrying Vernon in 1938. They lived in Shrewsbury for nearly fifty years where they commercially raised chickens before owning and operating Underwood Arms on Main Street. They retired to Spencer in 1988. Helen was a devoted wife, nursing her husband through Parkinson’s disease until his death in 2002, and a hard-working, generous, fiercely independent woman who was proud of her Polish heritage and continued to live an active life despite painful arthritic knees. She owned and cared for horses well into her eighties and instilled her love and passion for them and all animals in her children. She displayed a strength and spirit which will be remembered by all who knew her. The life lessons she taught us on motherhood will be warm memories in our hearts forever.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30, 2012, at 11 A.M. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 440 West Main Street in Shrewsbury where she was a long time member. The family wishes to thank the VNA, the staff at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, and all her caregivers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s memory to the Greater Worcester Land Trust (Sibley Farm Campaign), 4 Ash Street, Worcester, MA 01608, a local project dear to Helen’s heart, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

SPENCER: Pauline (Lange) Berthiaume, 83, of Temple Street died Tuesday, July 3 in UMass Memorial Hospital after an illness.

Her husband Emery J. Berthiaume died in 1998. She leaves a son David E. Berthiaume of Spencer, three grandchildren Jake Berthiaume of Mt. Juliet, TN, Lauren Comeau of Spencer and Diana Berthiaume of Spencer, four great-grandchildren Talan, Ray, Skyla & Kayana and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Berthiaume was born in Worcester, daughter of Joseph and Julia (Barrett) Lange. She worked at Brookfield Shoe Co. for many years. She enjoyed bingo and tending to her yard.

The funeral will be held Saturday, July 7 at 10:00AM in J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer. Burial will follow in Mary, Queen of the Rosary Cemetery, Spencer. Michael J. Perchak, Jr., 61, of Jolicoeur Ave. died Sunday, July 8 in Tufts Medical Center, Boston after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 40 years, Charlene A. (Bartos) Perchak, two sons Nathan M. Perchak & Michael J. Perchak, III and two daughters Jessica A. Perchak & Katherine A. Perchak all of Spencer, his mother Nellie (Misiaszek) Perchak of Sunderland, two brothers Bernard Orsulak of Hadley and James Perchak of Sunderland, two sisters Kathy Purdy of Lilburn, GA and Sandra Malinoski of Bernardston, seven grandchildren Riley, Jarrett, Brodey, DJ, Layne, Lillian and Isabella, several nieces and nephews and his three canine companions Sophie, Sushi and Fred.

Michael was born in Northampton, son of the late Michael J. Perchak, Sr. He was the President and Owner of Capco Inc. Welding and Sheet Metal Fabricating for over 30 years. He also owned and operated Capco Excavating. He was a member of the Hayden Lodge AF&AM. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, restoring antique cars and motorcycles, attending various “Bike Weeks”, riding motorcycles with his friends and offering his opinion to anyone who would listen. He was extremely skilled at many “hands on projects”. He was very generous to his family and friends and was loved by many.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, July 14 at 3:00PM in J. HENRI MORIN & SON Funeral Home, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Scott H. Metterville, 50, of Charlton St. died Thursday, July 19 in Harrington Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill.

He leaves his father Henry A. Metterville, Jr. of West Brookfield, three brothers Dennis N. Metterville and his wife Dorothy of Brookfield, Gary H. Metterville and his wife Debra of Webster and David L. Metterville and his wife Amy of Spencer, two sisters Christine A. Metterville of West Brookfield and Crystal J. Dalve and her husband Mark of West Brookfield, several nieces and nephews, his caregivers James and Christine Monahan with whom he lived and his dog Princess. He was pre-deceased by a sister Patricia Metterville.

Scott was born in Worcester, son of the late Anita (Young) Metterville. He loved Elvis Presley, Super Heroes, going out to eat and to the movies. He participated in his first Special Olympic Games in June competing in and winning a Gold metal in Softball and receiving a first place ribbon in Track & Field. The family would like to thank the staff at the Center of Hope in Southbridge for all the care they have given to Scott over the years.
